It can be tricky to tell the difference between Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and arthritis because both can cause pain in the hands and wrists. However, Carpal Tunnel usually affects the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger, causing numbness, tingling, or a pins and needles sensation. Arthritis, on the other hand, often causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, particularly in the knuckles and base of the thumb. If you’re unsure, a physical exam and diagnostic tests like nerve conduction studies or X-rays can help differentiate the two. And it is not unusual that you might have a bit of both symptoms.
